Simple and Space-Saving Fall Decor

I’m doing my best to live a simpler life and not accumulate much while we live in the cabin.  All of our fall decor is in storage, and though I thought I could get by for a year without any of it, I needed a nod to my favorite season in some form.

Saturday, on a whim, I took the kids to a pumpkin patch.  Carolyn’s is pretty amazing if you’ve never been (the admission is kind of pricy, but the pumpkin donuts make up for that) and I was so impressed with everything.  Especially their pumpkins.
Not only did they have a huge selection of heirlooms, they were the best prices I’ve ever seen.
Most of the small pumpkins were 3 for 2 dollars, and the large ones were $5 each.  I spent a little over $30, and I know some nurseries charge $20 or 30 a piece for the bigger heirlooms.
There were 4 main colors at the patch, and I wanted to be sure to get a variety.  I tried to pick at least two of every color and at varying sizes.
The big, flat pumpkins are my favorite, so I started with those on the outside, opposite of the wheel to create some balance.  Then I put the biggest of the other pumpkins into the wheel barrel.
After placing the big ones, I mixed in some smaller gourds and squash.
And clustered some in front of the stack on the ground.
It’s certainly not rocket science, but it can be difficult to get a balance that also feels natural.

I planted a pumpkin patch on the side of the cabin when we first moved in (you can see it in the above picture): 15 hills in the hopes of having all types of pumpkins.  I watered it daily and did my best to care for it, but I was a month late getting it in and the summer was just too mild.  I got 2 pumpkins out of it, but certainly not enough to satisfy my desire for fall.  I’m so glad I invested a bit in some natural decor that will be enjoyable for the season, yet won’t require storage after the fact.

    I can't believe how good the prices on the pumpkins were! My favorite thing about fall is the cool weather and the changing leaves color. I'd love to take a pair of Holiday Mart tickets off your hands 🙂

    Ahhh…I just love looking at these photos. So quaint. Nice pumpkin and gourd selection and styling! I feel semi-greedy competing for Holiday Mart tickets again this year, but I'm going for it anyway. 🙂 Choosing one favorite thing about fall is difficult for me since I LOVE everything about the season. But if I had to choose just one, it would probably be the weather. No, the foliage! No, the weather. Off to find your Better Kansas City segment from this morning! I bet you did great! 🙂

    My favorite thing about fall is definitely the weather. Living in the midwest we can have pretty harsh winters and hot summers so the days in the fall when it is highs in the 70's and lows in the 50's and 60's are pretty much perfect. It makes me want to spend all of my time outside! And maybe it's just me, but the fall air smells good 🙂

    I'm seriously impressed that you were able to get all of these pumpkins there with your kids in tow! Supermom. 😉 I love fall for the pumpkin food/drinks, Carolyn's pumpkin patch (and the donuts of course), but I really love it for the weather and all of the fun family activities you can enjoy outside while wearing your cute boots and scarves and vests!

    My favorite thing(s) about fall are the cool crisp mornings, perfect for drinking your morning coffee on the patio while the kiddos run off some energy before nap time!

    Your fall decor is beautiful! I like the simplicity of it, too. My favorite thing about fall is wearing cozy (and sometimes, oversized) sweaters. Fall is my favorite season!

    My favorite thing about fall is the cooler weather, festive things like pumpkin patches, picking apples. Also love a good pumpkin bar! Love your pictures above, they really capture fall!
