Thanks for all of your thoughts on the chairs, I’ve got some samples ordered and can’t wait to nail down a shade! It’s been a busy and exciting weekend around here and our kitchen has gone from this to this…
Micah has some great friends, and he always manages to coral them up when we need extra hands and muscle. Thank you Ron, Brett, Joseph, and John! Whenever you demo a house especially an older home you just never know what you’re going to find. There can be so many things hiding behind the walls, but in general we got pretty lucky. Some of our biggest issues were found a few weeks ago. From day one I knew I wanted this soffit gone.
Why did anyone decide soffits should be a thing? My father-in-law warned us that if the soffit was framed in before the electrical and plumbing were done, they would likely have wires and pipes running through them. So Micah cut some holes in them one day and sure enough, there were both.
Like all hiccups, he first tells me we’ll have to totally change cabinet plans but after a bit of discussion we figured out that most of the pipes can be rerun through the studs thank goodness for pipe-fitting friends. The plumbing in that top picture isn’t easily finagled, but after talking to our contractor we can notch out the back of that cabinet and work around it. I care about a pipe being visible, but I don’t care about a pipe in a cabinet I’ll probably open once a year.
I love finding past decor, and we definitely found that here. Muted florals, black and white stripes, and blush/nude tones…what goes around comes back around!

Oh my goodness, how very very exciting! I love your vision for that beam – crown moulding is a fantastic idea. Can't wait to see what's up next! Thanks for sharing your process!

Wow…it's really coming along. I really like the ceiling idea. As for cooking during remodeling, I always used my crockpot. You can buy crockpot liners at the grocery store to help with cleanup. Grilling is always a great option. Tin foil packets for side dishes.

Crockpot, microwave, and grill……we lived in our garage for 6 weeks while completing our new home one room at a time. After batheooms and laundry, the kitchen was first when we were forced to close early on the sale of our previous home….sooooo garage it was alone with all of our furniture. Thankfully it was heated! So much like camping, although, your project xhould go quickly. Best wishes. Can't wait to see the end result.

I’m a new visitor but like what I’ve seen so far. My advice Take-out or BBQ until the dust settles, I did.

Reading this brings back so many memories of my own kitchen remodel two years ago. A complete gut job of the exact same cabinets with the exact same hardware, except I had double soffits! And yes, they did hide duct work and wiring. So glad I eliminated them and took advantage of my 9′ ceilings by putting in taller upper cabinets. So nice to have additional storage for the things you need but don’t use as often. Oh, and I enter with white shaker cabinets and subway tile. Such a fresh look and feel compared to my old kitchen space. Good luck on your remodel!

That’s what we’re planning and I’m so excited for it! Moving some of the pipes as I type this. 🙂 Thanks, Jane!

Really enjoyed this post. A kitchen reno is a huge undertaking, but you have a great attitude. The finished product will be worth it!
