While the nutcrackers on our main tree are playful, I wanted to give the kids a chance to have some decor to really call their own this Christmas. The holiday season brings to mind so many elements and traditions I look forward to, but having kids takes this time of year to a whole new level of joy. This fall I was wandering the aisles of At Home with Milly when she came to a screeching halt and exclaimed “Mom, I have to have that!”
Now, I hear this often in regards to silly things she doesn’t need, but when I turned to gaze upon the hot pink tree, the little girl in me thought, “yes, yes we do!” At Home has tons of tree options, but their colored selection had my brain spinning, and I decided it would be fun to let each of the kids choose a color and bring some Christmas into their own rooms.
Last year we had a big tree in the playroom, but with baby Domino’s arrival I was planning to skip that merriment this year. These little trees and their $25 price tag were the perfect solution to giving the kids some holiday cheer in a very doable way.
You know I love to mix styles and colors in unexpected ways, so when Milly opted for the hot pink I thought using ornaments in soft colors and metallics would be pretty. At Home displays their ornaments by collection, making it easy to keep my excited 4-year-old focused on decor that will all look nice together. Right away she had her eye on the Santa, butterfly and ballerina.
I added in some burgundy balls I had on hand to bring in a bit of depth. The tree is feminine yet bold…just like my Milly.
Xander was drawn to the red, black, and blue versions of the tree, but ultimately he thought the red with his green walls felt the most like Christmas. I can’t get enough of the modern/woodsy feel we ended up with. We found the white ball garland first and then stumbled upon the little mice. Aren’t they so sweet? From there Xander grabbed the fox, deer, birds, and lumberjacks.
And then he saw Alvin. I mean, he was within the color scheme. And Milly’s tree also has Peppa.
After a quick trip and less than an hour spent decorating, the kids have a bit of Christmas to call their own. While Jesus is the reason for the season, children are the reason we celebrate the way we do.
How do you include your kids in the decking of the halls?
