Several months ago I rearranged our living room, opening up a blank space on the wall. I knew art was the answer, but I also knew it needed to be something large and not too loud (there is already enough going on in the neighboring bookshelves). Something that size would be expensive, so I kept my eyes open for a piece I could DIY or rehab.
A few weeks ago I popped into a Restore that I don’t frequent but check out when I’m in that area. I didn’t see anything of interest, but as I was putting the cart back I noticed this thing in all it’s ugliness tucked behind the carts…

Hi ! Great job !
The way you've textured and painted it remind me what I made for my miniatures hobby game table and diorama.
Will you make an other one, more red and blue, to call it "Fire in the sky" ??? 😉
Tuelean from France
Tuelean, thanks so much! Yes, I thought it kind of looked like a mountain range from above. 🙂
Wow, love it! We are both on doing the abstract art thing.
Seeing yours was the push I needed to try it!
You're painting came out fantastic! Love all the texture and it is just right for that space.

Thanks so much, Angela!
What a great rehab! I love the texture as much as the actual design!
Thanks so much, Beth! The texture definitely made the piece!
great idea, and it turned out beautifully!
thanks, lady!
A fabulous reuse! Canvases are expensive new. I think you are right texture is the key. I need some cheap art around here and I am going to take your advice to heart!
Thanks, Sarah! I know, this has opened up a whole new world for me!
What a great use for an ugly canvas. Love your art and really, your entire living room. I'm drooling over your giant succulent on the coffee table, too. 🙂
Thanks! Walmart!
This so great!!! I love the idea of repurposing art into something of your own. Great job!
Thanks, Summer!
I love painting over old (ugly) artwork. It's such a cost effective way to fill a large space. It looks great in that space!
Thanks, Bethany!
So beautiful! I love that you went black and white! It look so great in your living room.
Thanks, Amber! I thought it would have the most staying power. I wanted to do a color initially, but figured I'd end up getting tired of it. 🙂
ohhh i love it, so beautiful! you are soo creative, girl!!
Thanks, Sandy! Miss you and hope to see you soon!
LOVE this!! 🙂 It looks so professional!!
I appreciate you saying that, because that was my main concern was making something that didn't necessarily look like I had made it. 🙂
This turned out incredible! It's really cool!
Thanks, Laurie!
Love the texture. It turned out great!
Thanks, Jennifer!
great idea and it looks great!
Thanks!
YES! That looks great!
Old paintings often have the most kick ass texture that would take me an eternity to recreate. You did a marvelous job! XO
Thanks so much, yes, the texture was the best part!
That is amazing! I'm pretty sure if I attempted something like that it would not turn out at all. You have inspired me, though, and I'll now be on the lookout for a piece I can try it out with. BTW, I'm over on recommendations from Vintage Revivals and I'm already in love with your blog 30 seconds in:)
You can do it, Kari! Trust me, I was a bit terrified. I am Type A, so abstract things are hard for me, but I've found that the more I try them, the easier they get. Best of luck and thanks for reading!
Can I ask, did you make the heart that is framed that says "in all things"? I just love that.
Thank you
Erin
Hi Erin! Sorry I'm just getting back with you. You can find the heart in Lindsay Letters shop right here. Thanks for reading!
Love this! Where did you get that amazing floral pillow?
Thanks, Sophia. I made the pillow. The fabric is called Orangerie and it's by Designer's Guild. You can find remnants sometimes on ebay, that's where I got mine.
