As the temperature and humidity rise, so does my hair. During the warmer months you’ll find me, more often than not, with all of my hair on top of my head. I’m a rather sweaty person, and the last thing I need is an extra layer in the heat.
While beauty has never been something I planned to focus on here, less then a month into blogging I had people asking about my hair. I wrote this post about my haircare routine and it is the most viewed post to date. Since sharing that I’ve had a lot of questions about the spin pins I use. I knew a video would show so much more than photos ever could, so I coerced a friend to teach me a few things and this week I finally made it a point to put something together.
Along with keeping me cooler in the summer, I wear a top knot almost every night to bed (it keeps my hair from getting bent or kinky and gives me some great volume the next morning).
The Spin Pin box tells you not to cross them, but I’ve found it to be how you get a secure hold that will last all day. The tighter you twist your hair, the tighter your knot will hold and by pushing down on the bun as you screw the pins in, you ensure more hair being wrapped in the coils. I like how the style gets softer as the day goes on, but you could start with a ponytail if you prefer something that stays tight and secure – great for working out.
Do you have a go-to summer hairstyle?
A huge thank you to my friend, Cole Blaise, for helping me put together this video.

I love this. I have never seen pins like that!
I make that same top knot with the same pins for my daughter almost every morning. Unfortunately that do gives me a headache if I have it all day.
You are the CUTEST! Definitely going to try the spin pins.
They're amazing!
Thanks for doing this as I've been wanting to try those spin pins.
I LOVE SPIN PINS! Thanks to your original hair post I use them all the time 🙂 I have a sensitive scalp and my head doesn't ache nearly as much by then end of the day like rubber bands do! Thanks for this post!
Oh good! I know, I feel like they're super comfy. Glad you love them too!
Lovely! Who knew it was that easy?! I guess, you did! 🙂
I didn't for a while, but I'm glad I do now! 🙂
My hair is finally long again and I'm definitely going to try these spin pins out. Thanks for the tutorial.
I have to try this! I am still so bad at top knots but this looks easy!
Cute video! You are gorgeous!
You're sweet, thanks Ashley!
super cute 🙂
Love it! I've never seen spin pins before but am definitely checking them out. My top knots always take too much trouble…this looks super easy!
I love those spin pins! I've been using them for a couple years now and if they ever get discontinued I will stockpile them like it's End of Days.
You are beautiful Gwen! My hair is always in a top knot these days, so quick and easy! I've never heard of spin pins, but will definitely have to give them a try.
You're sweet. They will save you so much time. Hope you can get your hands on some!
incredible!
They really are!
Ufff, now I'm depressed! 😉
I hope I didn't make you that way!
Super cute video Gwen. I love the music and how you make it look so simple. This is a helpful tip since I have been growing my hair out.
What the heck? You make this look so flawless. Running to the store to get these right now! These just gave me back 20 minutes. haha!!! Thanks!
It might take a few times to get the twisting down, but the rest is really simple! Just make sure to push down as you're spinning and cross them.
Hi. I read your blog. Its nice to read. Hope very helpful to all. See my blog also Industrial Staple Pin Manufacturers Bangalore | Star Corporation
Spin Pins are amazing!!! They also make tiny ones for very super fine hair, or if you want to only pull up the top part of your hair and not all of it.
I recently purchased this super amazing updo clip, and I think I love it just as much as Spin Pins!! I tried looking for it on the Conair company site, and it's not there, so not sure if they are no longer making it. You can still find it on Amazon, and I purchased mine at a Meijer store. It slides it so smoothly, and if you are a bit clumsy with getting the pins in, this one is just one piece and really slides in without having to be fussy. And it hides inside your hair so you don't see it.
