CommunityAmerica believes a big aspect of financial security is living within your means to fund your dreams, and I was thrilled when they wanted to partner up to share my love of thrifting. All thoughts and opinions in this series are my own.
This series has been such a long time coming, and I am beyond thrilled to be sharing the first segment with you today! Thrifting is such a big part of who I am and why my style is the way it is. I will preface the series by saying, when I use the word thrift, I am referring to being thrifty. For me that’s buying secondhand. I started thrifting clothes and jewelry in high school and college, spending my afternoons at Savers and my Saturdays at Brass Armadillo. Once I became a stay-at-home mom and was looking for budget friendly ways to spruce up our home I started looking at home decor and furnishings and just couldn’t get enough.
Today’s post is all about why you should thrift. I know it’s become quite popular in the last few years, but I also know that there are still some people out there who aren’t into it. Let me try to convince you! I started for finance’s sake, but along the way I’ve discovered so many other wonderful reasons to buy secondhand things.
I thrifted a pair of these parsons chairs for $12 total! and had them recovered.
BECAUSE WHO DOESN’T WANT MORE MONEY? This is why I started thrifting, and it continues to be a big reason I do it. Thrifting for the things I want or need is so much more economical then buying it new. I’ve bought desks for $20, sinks for $10, books for $.10, art for $7…over and over again. When you thrift things for your home you have more money to spend elsewhere, and you can often get a higher-end look at a fraction of the price. And because I thrift I can splurge once in a while. Because I save on so many things, there is more money to buy nicer, new items. Because I thrift I can shop more than I could if I was buying new.
I found this lamp in the basement of a small town antique mall and paid under $5 for it. It sells online for over $500!
BECAUSE IT’S HELPING OTHERS I’ll talk about this a bit more in the next post, but shopping at thrift stores and estate sales, specifically, can really help others. I prefer to stick to locally run stores when I can because that money is going right back into the community I’m in. Shopping at an estate sale is helping a family financially and physically after their loved one can no longer take care of their things. Getting something new-to-me and helping someone else get a fresh start or take care of their family feels good.
At nearly 18″ in diameter, this silver punchbowl was a total score for $20.
BECAUSE IT’S SAVING TREASURES As Americans, we live in likely the most consumeristic society this planet has ever known. We are constantly bombarded with the latest and greatest and what we “need.” If I’m going to play into that I do love the hunt I want to do it in a way that is smart. When it comes to thrift stores and antique malls, I feel like I’m saving something from the dump. When it comes to estate sales I feel like I’m saving a treasure that someone else could no longer take care of.
I snagged this mirror off Facebook Marketplace for $20. It is my style objectified!
BECAUSE IT HELPS YOU DEVELOP YOUR STYLE Of all of the points, this one took me the longest to realize, but thrifting helps make your home you. Personal style is something that takes time and attention to develop. It has taken me years to get to where I am right now, and I know my style will only continue to evolve. Thrifting allows me to get a look no one else has because I’m incorporating pieces that aren’t available at the nearest retailer. I’d venture to guess I have a home that doesn’t look like anyone else’s in my town, and I’m proud to say that!

BECAUSE IT’S FUN The bottom line for me is that I enjoy it. Thrifting is all about the hunt. You never know what you’re going to find at the next store or down the next aisle. I love the thrill of it all, and the prospect of finding something unique and special most of all!
Next week we’ll discuss where to thrift. I hope you’ll join me! In the meantime, I thought it would be really fun to do a giveaway of some things I’ve thrifted lately. I love sharing my thrifting journeys over on Instagram stories, and people are often wishing they could snag what I’ve found, so here’s your chance! GIVEAWAY CLOSED. Congrats to Suzanne H. for winning!

Because more is MORE! And I love ALL OF THE BEAUTIFUL THINGS!!
Carlotta says
I enjoy thrifting for all of the rejoins you listed above but probably most of all to create my unique style.
Julianne says
I thrift to find quality items that they don’t make anymore or they do and I could never afford it. I found an Queen Anne dining room table with two leaves and 4 chairs from Drexel heritage for $600. There is no way to get Drexel heritage that cheap now. While looking for more chairs, a head Queen Anne dining chair from them costs about $500. I love the unique items you find.
Molly Diehl says
I love to thrift because I love art, but don’t have a ton of money to spend on it. I also love all of the unique details of old furniture and decor.
Oscar Bravo says
I most definitely love to buy secondhand because many times the quality of pieces are much better than the new, store-bought version in my price range.
I always look forward to seeing your found treasures, thanks for sharing!
Selena says
I thrift bc theres such NICE pieces out there, and things arent made how they once were. Theres a story behind them, therefore history. I ABSOLUTELY love it all the way around. Our house is eclectic, i buy what we love and what speaks to us as individuals or as a family, so then well love what is around us. You find gorgeous pieces at such a great price. I LOVE following you. Its made me want to find new spots to go out and find treasures. Me and my daughter went out an hour out from our home to find new antique stores. And found GREAT PIECES:) please dont stop sharing, you inspire me, and many more i know.

I thrift because like you I want one of a kind items in my home. I also love the thrill of finding something that really makes me smile. It’s the best and most fun hobby ever! I love this post!!!!!
Malkie Berger says
I thrift because I love the thrill of the hunt. Adding something with a history and some patina gives a room some soul!
I would love to win those parsons chairs! I mean, 😍😍
Leilani says
I thrift for the sheer joy of the hunt. I feel like a modern day pirate with some of the amazing finds I discover – and at the low prices I buy them for. It all started with my frustration of the clothing my parents picked out for me. They said if you want different then make money and buy what you pick out yourself. Found my money went much further and my closet expanded more if I thrift shopped. Now it’s mostly for home decor quirky items. Feeling that I don’t actually need anything makes it fun to find an item that makes me smile and also enjoy blessing someone else by turning loose and donating things that our family has outgrown.
Malkie Berger says
I thrift because items with a history and a little patina add some soul into a room! I love the thrill of the hunt. You never know what treasures you can find in the bric a brac.
I would love to win those parsons chairs, I mean 😍😍!
Tamari says
I started thrifting due to being able to afford quality items in a reasonable price.
Along the way not only I was doing it for economic reasons but as well for aesthetics.
Once you start thrifting you somehow start to develop a very unique style that you can only identify with. You expand your mind and imagination and your house suddenly looks like a “million dollar place “. You are given the chance to embalish your home with items from different era or from different places of the world .You have the opportunity to turn an Ugly Duckling into a gorgeous Swan. And who does not wants all of these?!
You just have to be open minded about it and see the big picture of it!
And who knows someday you might even come across with some actual treasure.
Brittany Eaton says
I absolutely love thrifting because of the hunt! How remarkable it truly is to find things no one else has – or has seen in decades! I typically go with my mom or grandmother and they constantly tell me stories of how they grew up and had similar pieces. If often turns into a history lesson and shopping all in one! Fingers crossed!
Casey says
My mom was the manager at a thrift store growing up so I learned the love of thrifting early! At one point growing up, we had 7 (!) thrifted couches in our house… I love to thrift for all of the above reasons but especially because of the thrill! There’s nothing better than finding something expensive for less than $20! All the nicest furniture in my house is thrifted hah!
Jennifer Radmanesh says
I thrift because it’s fun! I love finding one of a kind pieces that I can add to my home and express my creativity!
Morgan Tolson says
I love thrifting because I can fill my home with beautiful items that I otherwise would not have been able to afford. Most interior designers I follow fill their blogs & homes with $1000 chairs. I love their style, but it is definitely not in my bedget! I can use that inspiration & find similar items while thrifting!
Nicole says
I thrift because I’ve always loved a good vintage find, and it’s my “me time” ! Love your style!!
Tammy says
I thrift for the thrill of finding something amazing. I love spending time with my sister (my thrifting buddy) and bouncing ideas of how to re-use, re-paint, re-upholster, re-love something someone no longer feels is valuable. I love when someone comes to my home and says they love a piece I’ve found for a dollar or two. And I love even more, their face when I tell them where I got it and how much I paid. It’s funny, when I was younger and didn’t have money, I did not see the value or appeal of thrifting. Now that I’m older and have a good income, I can’t wait for my next trip! I think that makes me older and wiser! 🙂
Afton says
My mom (who has one of the greatest eyes) got me started thrifting! It’s a modern day treasure hunt! I love of the thrill of the hunt and having items that no one else has!
Marjorie says
Oh so many reasons! My very most favorite reason is the thrill I get. It’s probably close to what theives feel when they get away with a heist since that’s basically how it would appear. A $250 silverware set for $5? Que evil laugh and snatch it right up!
Ashley Whittle says
I always tagged along with my mom when she went thrifting and found lots of fun clothes! My aunt has a beautiful home with an eclectic mix of thrifted and store bought finds, which inspired my style when I started decorating my own apartments. It’s also so fun to find treasures in junky stores! Lol
Connor says
I thrift because I can find pieces that are more my style, better quality, and more unique than the pieces found in stores today! There’s nothing better than finding a great deal on a quality piece that adds a high-end, collected look to any home.
Melissa says
I thirsty because the quality of vintage items is so much higher than the quality of contemporary items, especially furniture. I also thrift because a home is so much warmer if the furnishings and decor are “layered” with time. If everything is the same ‘age’ and matches it looks and feels flat whereas when you have things from different eras it feels collected and unique.
Suzanne says
I thrift mainly because my budget is super tight but I also love giving hidden gems a new home or new life with a diy makeover!
Melissa says
Omg please correct ‘I thirsty’ to I thrift. Thanks! D I love this series!
MaryPat says
I want to start thrifting to 1) develop my home style more with low risk/cost and 2)combat consumerism/waste and to purchase more ethically (buying used/thrifted helps to mitigate labor exploitation globally). I think it could be really fun to do with friends!
Kristi says
If I’m being honest, I thrift because I’m cheap! 🤣 I love getting more bang for my buck and finding high quality items for a steal. The adventure of sifting through items and stalking stores weekly to score something incredible never gets old. The best moments are when the stars align and you find the item that has been sitting on your thrift list for ages! I always coveted that cute little marble table with a brass base that you have. Wouldn’t you know I walked into the thrift store just months ago and found it’s twin sister, during the furniture sale(!!!), and walked away with it for $7.50. I love the feeling of looking around my home and being surrounded by my one of a kind pieces with so much story behind them.
Megan says
I thrift because those are the items get give your home a soul…you just cant buy character. I also love that feeling that I’ve won something because I bought it at a fraction of the price it’s being sold online.
Angie says
I would love to started thrifting. I’ve been to Brass Armadillo and some other second hand stores in the area but I guess I need to have a vision for where and what the potential is for the pieces I see! So excited to continue reading next week.
Sherri says
I have always loved thrifting,it is the thrill of the hunt, and I am always up for a good hunt.Love watching you hunt and all your treasures.
Chelsea says
I love finding unique pieces that my friends don’t have! I want my space to feel eclectic and “me” and thrifting helps me accomplish that! Your Instagram videos are my favorite and inspire me!
Falohn says
I thrift because I love old things with a history. I love wondering where something has been, who loved it before me, etc. I have a chair in my entry I got for $5 and I smile every time I see it.
Marcelene says
I’ve just started thrifting! I thrift because, I like bringing these pieces into my home, it adds interest and there’s a feeling of rescuing something from the bottom of a box and giving it new life. It’s so interesting going to a thrift shop and looking through all the treasures. I like thinking about the person that owned the item before me and wondering what their story is.
Jessica Bauer says
I love to hunt for something new and unique. When I was younger, I would go thrift shopping for jewelry. Now I love looking for unique finds for my home.
Rachael says
I love being able to experiment with something without spending a ton of money. I do a lot of painting and reupholstering and it’s so fun to be able to try different things without a huge monetary investment!
Miranda says
I love that you’re encouraging people to thrift! I’ve been thrifting since I was in high school, it started out as a way to be able to get more bang for my buck. But as an adult I love the unique and eclectic items you can find when thrifting that would usually be out of price range or something you can’t find anymore. And as someone that is trying to leave a better earth for my kids I love recycling and repurposing in all ways. 😊💛
SANDY M says
I thrift to find one-of-a-kind decor items that look luxe (the thrill of the hunt is just like you said, addictive and I go at least once a week and more when I can!) and because I love finding gorgeous silver serving pieces to use when entertaining (boy have I found some beauties!) and for elegant dishes and crystal to mix and match for fabulous tablescapes!
Noreen says
I am (starting to) thrift because quality, timeless pieces make a house a home. My mom had a great eye for furniture and pieces with character. It’s easy to get pulled into trends but now that I’m finally finding my style, I feel the tug of those timeless treasures. I don’t have much time, but I just discoccerd my local estate sale company posts their sales a few weeks out! Excited to hunt for more hidden gems
Amanda says
I love thrifting because you can find such unique stuff. Where else can I find a midcentury modern chest for $200 or a brass crab for $5? I really think my love for thrifting for my home started when I was trying to find unique and inexpensive Halloween decorations!
Teri says
I thrift because its like a treasure hunt–and there is almost always a “treasure” found. I never seem to find really valuable items, but I do occasionally find very usable ones. I wish I knew a reasonable reupholster as I never buy furniture that needs it because its too expensive even if I get the item cheap. I’d love that Greek key vase! Thanks for the giveaway!
Elizabeth Luttenegger says
I thrift because of the thrill, because of the effectiveness, because I have more time than money, because it’s more fun to reuse and repurpose, because everything you touch while thrifting carries history and a story, and because my style is more outlandish than anything new and normal sitting on the shelves at the stores right now. 🖤
Rhianna Beste says
I too thrift for the thrill of the hunt! Also, I love to fond treasures for a fraction of the cost of something at one of the popular high priced stores. Thrifting allows me to have a truly unique home and each item has a story behind it.
Toni Carpenter says
I thrift for the same reasons as you mainly. I love to add style & unique items to my home that I adore & bring me joy. I appreciate having one of a kind items in my home and saving money. I also appreciate being able to create a “collected” look to my belongings that look like beautiful pieces & things I’ve inherited from my older relatives. Art is my very favorite thing to collect because older pieces often are the best quality!
Sarah says
I thrift because I love finding something unique. And I love the hunt. It’s so fun to spend time looking for something that is “me” – it’s one of my favorite ways to treat myself, having alone time and finding something special (self-care that doesn’t have to cost a lot!)
Thus far, my favorite item is a burl wood desk that I got for a great deal a few years back – I think you were the one who shared the Craigslist posting it and I couldn’t pass it up. Thanks!!
Olivia G says
I like to thrift with my mother. It is so fun to browse items that bring back stories from her childhood, or remind her or items she remembers her mother having. It is such a fun adventure for the two of us to go out thrifting together, it is our own special treasure hunt and ever since I was a child, it has been a wonderful way for us to spend time together. The silly stories and reminiscences of the best and the worst items we have seen feel like our own kind of special shared memories. Thrifting is both a treasure hunt, and an incredible way to spend time with loved ones.
Kim says
I agree with the comment above about reupholstering–it’s so dang expensive! I’m more of a trash picker and refinisher than a thrifter (end tables, glider, and more in my house all came out of trash left out by my neighbors) but reading this is making me feel more inspired to try thrifting.
Lee Braden says
Oh my gosh what a fun post! I thrift for a lot of the same reasons that you do. I want to find unique pieces that help translate the style that I’m constantly developing. It’s also something that my best friend and I love to do together. The thrill of hunting is so much fun! Plus it’s environmentally friendly which is also very important to me! Looking forward to the rest of this series.
Amy says
Let’s face it – who doesn’t love a bargain! Also, I love things that have a sense of history. I want a home that looks collected over time. Your home should tell your story which is always evolving. Thrifting allows you to do that without breaking the bank!
Arli says
I thrift because you never know what you’ll find. Some days it’s all hit and others it is all miss, but I love uncovering the surprises. It’s just so much fun!
Krista says
I love thrifting!! It started with my mom – so many great memories!! It is a thrill to find great things. I feel like I won the lottery!! I have a few girlfriends that we each know each other’s taste and we have such a great time thrifting together!! The pieces in my home all have a story. And I love that. You find great stuff!! I’m always so jealous!! The only furniture I have ever bought new was a couch and a baby bed.
Lisa Beich says
I thrift because I LOVE TO DIG FOR TREASURES! ♥️ Also, repurposing is cool.
Amy Gallardo says
I thrift because I love antiques and vintage items- I love to have a house full of treasures and pieces with a story, whether that is from my family, or something found on a trip, or at a local thrift shop. And I love the hunt!
Alice Berger says
I thrift because I believe in reducing my footprint. I’m saving something from the landfill and also not creating something new that will eventually be disguarded. I also like how I’m able to have something unique in my home!
Lori W says
Historically I haven’t been a good “picker.” Thirft stores can be overwhelming to the non-discerning eye. Following your thriftying adventures has helped me to spot treasures!
April Halliwell says
I thrift for the deal. Also, I think it makes the home seem more inviting, a mix of new and old.
Ellyn W says
I shop various thrift stores in my town as well as FB marketplace and Craigslist looking for furniture that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford. I could never go to a store or online retailer and get the deal I did recently…a solid wood faux bamboo style chest of drawers, triple dresser, 2 side tables and a queen headboard for $110! The pieces are spread throughout my house and a friend’s house and look amazing. The thing is, I’ve never thrifted anything other than furniture…hmm… I’ll have to start checking out the decor items as well. Thanks for your inspiration!
Andrea Morse says
I have ‘flirted’ with thrifting since college-over 18 years. I actually started because it was the cool thing to do and because I had no money as a college student. I loved finding clothes and purses many of which I still have. For many years leading up to now, I go back and forth with taking the time and effort in thrifting. As a parent now with so much on my plate, I don’t make the time and have no idea where to start these days. I think I have a good community around me for thrifting but I need to know where to start to get moving again. Thanks for your post that has inspired the love once again.

I’ve also been thrifting for years. For me, I find items from the past far more interesting. The craftsmanship and details of the items you can find while out thrifting cannot compare to new items found in stores today. I also enjoy the unique aspect it brings to my home. I would once “visit” a beautiful mid 1800’s cabinet in an antique store until one day (after years of no one purchasing it) my husband wanted to purchase it for my 30th birthday. We offered much less than asking price and the seller accepted. When you are a serious thrifter something like that feels huge and very rewarding. I think it takes a certain type of person to love thrifting. I absolutely enjoy watching your thrifting adventures! Your style is very similar to mine and often hard to find out in the blogging / social media world so thank you for sharing!

I thrift for all the reasons you mentioned (awesome post) and also because I love the idea of keeping something local. Someone in my town loved an item enough to buy it the first time around, and now I can continue to love it and keep it in the same area!
Lisa says
I used to thrift but them got out of the habit. I love how unique your home is! Makes me want to go out to a tag sale this weekend! Thanks for sharing.
Sara says
The thrill of finding a $300 Patty PlayPal doll for $5. I love, love, love to thrift and estate sale shop. It really is that feeling of not knowing what amazing thing is just around the corner. Did I say I love it?
Erin says
I thrift to find original pieces. Its cheap and fun to find treasures!
Lori says
Thank you, Gwen! Thrifting is important for me philosophically because of the reason you point out above, it reduces waste. I am a firm believer of reduce, reuse, recycle and with thrift stores and mostly estate sales I can find items that have more personality and are unique. Thank you for writing this and thanks to your sponsor of these posts. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
Turner says
Oh I love thrifting so much. I grew up going to estate sales and auctions with my dad. Then as a teenager I thrifted constantly for vintage clothes and cool objects for my room, then later for my dorm, and then for my first apartment. Now I live in a place that’s not so thrifting-conducive but reading your post brought back how much I love and miss it and seriously it made my heart pound a little faster lol. I love “the hunt” and noticing that special little thing in the shop that’s perfect and that nobody else has.

I love thrifting (no point in buying new when someone could be selling a barely used item for a fraction of the price). Most of my furniture was scored on Facebook’s market place or Kijiji (the Canadian equivalent to Craig’s list). Most of the art we have too! I also thrift for renovations. I own a rental property which was heavily damaged by my ex tenants and had to dish 5000$ in repair cost (floors, carpets, walls). I also had to replace all the closet doors they ruined (either by closing them violently or straight out punching holes in them). Market place was my first stop and I managed to snag all the doors I needed, in great conditions and the size I wanted for less than 100$ for all of them. I also recently was told by my new tenant that the patio screen door was also damaged (surprises never end) and I quickly found a replacement in near perfect condition on Kijiji for 20$. So thrifting for style and for renos is my go too every time (I even plan on re-doing the entire kitchen of my rental unit by buying used cabinets and counters sold on market place (it is insane the amount of people selling entire kitchens in great condition for a very low cost on Facebook, insane!)). Anyway, glad to see you’ve added Canadians to your giveaway (much appreciated as we’re rarely included). Also I want to add that your house is a true inspiration! It is a style I absolutely love (unfortunately the spouse is more of a modern guy so we have to compromise on every piece of deco. He gets the modern look and I get to add antique pieces and plants here and there).
Ashley says
i dont thrift but would like to so i can bring more one of a kind items into my home. My biggest problem with thrifting is having to dig for treasure. I usually give up fairly quickly.
Sara says
My love for things that have a story started when I was a little girl visiting my grandparents. My grandfather was intentional in everything he did, and it was reflected in his home from the antique furniture to his pewter collection to the keys holder, and if asked, he’d tell you the history of a piece. You’d think the paper napkins were even a thought-through decision! Haha My two closest-in-age girl cousins and I used to pretend we were out on the frontier in the old cabin end of the house with his early American room complete with a butter churner and black bear. We’d look through old books and look at black and white pictures of my grandparents from college, and play dress up in our parents’ costumes from school plays. It made me want to pass down this kind of whimsy and historical education to my future kids and grandkids, so that starts now while I’m beginning to curate my own home. Thrifting makes that dream attainable and while the great finds have a story, the thrifting itself can be a great story. The best part is when you find that piece you’ve been thinking about for months and you find it totally unexpected.
Kristen says
Love that you are doing a series on this! I have been thrifting for a few years now, and reading your blog is a big part of why I started. Now I’m addicted… I love the thrill of the hunt, that excitement when you find a super special piece, and thrifting appeals to my frugal nature!
Tricia Heliker says
Forty years ago when I was setting up a new household with my two small children, I thrifted out of necessity and realized how much I loved it. I would drive the alleys to and from work and that one mile commute often garnered me something I could repaint, restore, or reupholster. I have lived in the same three story house for 41 yrs. and I have never stopped thrifting as I rearrange, remodel, and reinvent my style.
Alexandra says
I love thrifting because it helps me inject more personality into our home, and just because it’s so fun to wander around searching for treasures! Your “thriftlikethemakerista” stories on insta are my fave!
Elle says
Thrifting is great fun — the hunt, the creativity of modifying something or planning how to use it, the way it infuses style and interest to our home. It also great fun to vicariously thrift by reading blogs like this! Thank you.
Alexandra says
I live for your thrifting insta stories! It’s like thrifting when I can’t! I started thrifting in high school and through my early adulthood because I was quite broke. I always loved getting compliments on my outfit or a piece of furniture that I paid almost nothing for. Now that I’m more established financially I’ve started going to antique stores and that’s opened a whole new door for me! Sometimes I feel like I was born in the wrong era, as I often long for a time of high quality design and kitsch (among other reasons) that just doesn’t exist today.
Tasha says
I thrift not only because it helps our bank account but also because I can find high quality well made things for so much cheaper than newly bought poorly made items. Plus I tend to love the pieces more because I had to work for them! I love your style, Gwen, and appreciate all of the tips and insight you have brought me throughout the years.
Kristen Tracey says
I love your style & sense of humor! I thrift for all the reasons you listed. I started years ago & these inexpensive items I’ve found over that time are some of the most treasured things I own. I’m still haunted by the items I didn’t buy though. Seriously, there’s one picture I passed up 10 years ago & when I went back to the shop days later, it was gone. Occasionally I’ll get online & google the hell out of its description, trying to find it. I’ve definitely learned to impulsively buy when thrifting!
Chris says
I like to thrift for the thrill of the hunt and for financial reward of saving money. I enjoy your posts on thrifting as they have helped give a better appreciation of how others castoffs can be given new life!
Lori Matsui says
My mother was a consummate thrifter and she passed that love on to me. Back when she was a newlywed decorating in a particular period of time was all the rage but she could only afford second hand (she had a great eye for style so people wouldn’t guess unless she told them) so she used to say she decorated in the ‘Early Attic ‘period. When we had three boys I wasn’t about to spend a lot on their clothes so they were mostly second hand and people used to compliment me on how well dressed they were, so I would smile(try not to laugh) and say thank you. Today my son’s have places of their own and love to share with me their great finds as they outfit their own homes so I guess it runs in our blood. I love your style, thanks for sharing all your wonderful tips!
Molly says
I thrift because I love art, but with my husband and I both still in graduate school, we don’t have a lot to spend. I also like to make art of my own, so finding thrifted frames is my favorite!I also love unique details and finding things you couldn’t find anywhere else, at least for the price.
Barbara Town says
WOW! So good! You may have convinced me. I love looking for great vintage accessories but I never thought of it as a way to save money on larger furnishings… I may have to hit the shops this weekend, and will definitely keep it local 🙂
Kristi says
I love thriftiness for many of the same reasons you listed. I don’t like to waste and thriftiness allows me to use products already out in the world. It saves me money: I bought a group of 2 dressers and an armoire for $100 on FB marketplace and painted them and love them so! I could never afford those pieces otherwise and they’re more quirky and unique to me. The thrill is also fun, too, the challenge of finding just what I’m looking for and also what I didn’t know I need😁 When I’m ready for a change, I pass the item along to either the VVA or a local church charity. It’s the best way to shop!

I can’t remember NOT thrifting. Like many others, I did so early in my marriage due to finances. I find the saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure” so very true. I am often baffled when I find name brand things barely used in Goodwill and thrift stores, but I am joyful when it happens. So that’s why I do it still to this day, even though it is no longer necessary: it brings me JOY to save money on a unique find.

I thrift / flea market hunt / antique hunt / garage sale go because its so amazing to find quality things that are either made cheaply now or are too expensive now for me to afford on a regular basis. I also LOVE collections / collecting. I am a big blue and white porcelain / transferware junkie. My mom and grandmother end up going with me a lot and are both lovers of antiques as well. I cant even count how many times I’ve heard “Oh I had this once!” or “I found one of these in the 60’s” it’s a family outing and history lesson all in one.

We have just moved to Ohio from the South and purchased a larger home than we previously had. I am so excited to check out the area thrift stores to furnish and make our new home feel like home.

I am slowly but surely cutting back on waste. I cringe almost any time I throw something away in the trash. I love knowing that when I thrift, it is one less thing going to the landfill. Also, I love Thinking about the “story” behind the thrift find before
I got my hands on it. Thanks for showing me cool ways to thrift and really helping me find my style ❤️

I have been a thrifter since I was little. My mother bought and sold antiques for most of my childhood. I remember being dragged out of town on thriftjng road trips and being able to start “collections” to keep me entertained. All in all I’ve learned the value of things and how to hunt with the best of them today. I wish I had a larger home because I cannot resist a treasure once found.
It’s a passion for sure.
Thank you for sharing your photos and thoughts through social media. When I am at work, and I cannot be thrifting, I dream of thrifting through your posts. Haha like a thrifting junkie.
Happy hunting

I thrift because it reminds me of my mom. Growing up as an only child, it was our favorite Saturday activity, just the 2 of us. We’d wake up early to hit the garage sales first, then move on to the antique and thrift stores, and then finish it with lunch, usually at Winstead’s (#KCGirlForever) I love thrifting for all the same reasons you do, and for the nostalgia, both my own, and thinking of the history of the items I discover. Old book smell is the best!

Thrifting is so fun! Be it Craigslist, the local antique flea market fair that happens every Saturday in Wichita, or Facebook Marketplace – I’ve found loads of treasures. My favorite find was a $30 coffee table on Craigslist. It ended up being an original McGuire 1960s Wheat Sheaf table! I’ve found other goodies, like things from the church playroom that brought back lots of fond memories.

I started thrifting 7 years ago. I was a young mother on a strict budget while my husband finished grad school. I wandered into a thrift shop one day and found a Ralph Lauren striped sweater for $7! I was hooked. Since then I’ve discovered I love thrifting for many of the same reasons you mentioned- my style has evolved, saving money and the environment especially. My husband is now a college professor and we’re fine financially but I’d never give up thrifting! Thanks for your post and your beautiful feed!
Lauren says
I thrift for all of the reasons you mentioned! I especially love that my home is so unique and so many things have wonderful stories. It’s also the only way I can afford original paintings! Last weekend, I found a brass beehive at an estate sale, and now I’m not sure how I ever lived without it. 😉 What a lovely giveaway, too!! (Definitely hoping that I will win. :))

I love the search, and finding items for good deals gives me a thrill, but I still have trouble identifying a solid purchase. I also find that I don’t have the time to thrift as much as I’d like (two small children with another on the way). Do you have any tips on how to weed through the volume that is out there and choose well?
Veronica says
I enjoy thrifting because it reminds me of Saturday mornings with my dad. When I was younger the few Saturdays my dad wasn’t working he would take us “goodie” shopping. He raised 8 kids, put them all through private school and college…”Saturdays Goodie shopping” was a treat both for the “goodies’ we found and the time we spent together. I’m lucky enough to be able to take him “goodie shopping” now. I love that we keep making memories and finding treasures.

Hey Gwen,
I am a KC local and always on the hunt. You mentioned having chairs reupholstered; my amazing upholsterist (probably not a real word) just retired. Anyone you would recommend in KC area? Thanks!

My first memories of coming to the U.S. involved thrifting with my grandmother. The concept of buying second-hand and having garage sales were not really popular back in my old country. But I loved it all! I’ve come to really enjoy the hunt and knowing that I’ve found something really unique and well-made at a great price. When you take the time to look through an array of treasures and not just being fed mass-marketed products, you end up discovering what you like and don’t like. I think in time that truly defined my style.

I am just starting to thrift. We have a historic home and I feel like it adds extra character to our home. Your instastories make me feel like I can do it!

My mom was one of 10 children living in a one bedroom house in Houston, TX. Both of my grandparents worked to provide for their family. Naturally, saving money was very important. So, my mother and her nine siblings thrifted out of necessity. Growing up, my mom passed on this activity to us. Going to the “segundos”(second hand store in Spanish) was about a monthly adventure for me and my sibling. I remember one time I found a Bop-It for next to nothing. I was over the moon! I used my allowance to purchase it and was hooked on thrifting!
Today I thrift not only out of necessity, but for fun too! My husband went to medical school which apparently has a hefty price tag. As we pay off medical school debt we thrift plenty! When searching for local people to follow! after moving to the KC area last year, I was overjoyed to find your blog! Your style is on point and I am astonished at your eye for beauty! It definitely inspires me to thrift more often..and with an open and careful eye!

Things that have stories and character are what make a house a home. I like to thrift because I ADORE mixing the old with the new, the high with the low, the gilded with the simple. My mom was a master at finding beautiful antique furniture and the occasional treasures (hello collection of limoge boxes!) and I’ve inherited a tiny bit of her love and her eye.
In a world of scandi-simplicity, your blog is a beautiful robust, colorful and unique universe!!!

Hi Gwen, I had a comment all typed and ready to go then lost it last night. Uff. So I’ll try again. You’re such an inspiration to me whether it be with all you have scored while thrifting or the beautiful way you are totally killing it with your home reno. My goal is to find more treasures like you have done but I’m still a work in progress. Living in a small town an hour from most shopping destinations, I don’t get the time needed to scour many thrift stores. You’ve got such a great eye and sense of style no matter what project you’re working on! Thanks for providing such fun and gorgeous posts about all that you’re up to. I enjoy them and you and your cute family too. And yes to this opp to snag some of your thrifting treasures Gwen. You’re the best, lady! ❤️

Ha! I just got back from an Estate sale. It started yesterday so a lot of the treasures were gone. I did pick up a vase (yes!) and a hairdryer for my guest bath. They had some really nice wood beds for $500. Too bad they were king or one would have come home with me. I like to check out my local Salvation Army, too. With all the well to do retirees in this community there are a lot of nice things passing through. It’s a matter of stopping in often. I used to garage sale on Saturdays but I now hit the trails for a good workout. My weight overrode my desire to thrift in that case. I love the thrill of the hunt!
Danielle Oke says
My thrifting borders on obsessive, and I’m not kidding! My most treasured items (including clothing and shoes) are almost exclusively vintage/new/thrifted. Yes, it’s thrifty, practical and earth friendly but I ADORE the hunt and the find. The crowning glory is achieving a personal look, sartorially and for my home, that is unique to me.

I love this series. A long time thrifter I, too, started to save money when raising a family and came to love the individuality of my style and the incredible quality available. I love the history of formerly loved items and get high end looks I won’t spend the money for otherwise. My husband and I are empty nesters and we love to go to estate sales, antique and consignment stores. He says it’s just what we do! I’ve created a couples activity! I actually like to go alone too because I can really browse and think. I decorated my daughter’s home the last 2 years and every time we visit her girlfriends ask if they can borrow me. They have the money and means to buy everything new but love her collected decorating filled with their famiy’s story instead. I loved this whole post (and your incredible style) but when I scrolled down and saw the dachshund letter holder I gasped. I have one that belonged to my grandmother and went to my mother and last year finally came to live with me!

Waste reduction FOR SURE!!! I love coming home with a new treasure without a box or wrapping or peanuts or packing. And also the ability to buy something unique… sometimes homes and designers on Pinterest or Instagram feel like the exact same thing over and over and it’s gotten uninteresting! Love your unique style!

Hi Gwen I like this post! I’ve been following you for awhile intrigued with your thrifting stories but unsure about it for myself. This post is pushing me out of my comfort zone. I would love to figure out my style. So my daughter and I are going to give it a go. We’re excited and have no idea where to start. I guess I’ll google thrift shops in St Louis!!

Most people in their early 20’s still consider hanging a poster “decorating.” However, I’m not sure I’ve ever shared a ton of traits with people my age and my passion for architecture and design are true to that. As I still have a long way to go on my student loans, (private education is not cheap) thrifting has become one of my favorite weekend activities. This allows me to have an asthetically appealing home without stretching myself too thin financially. Additionally, it allows me to still splurge when I find a piece I cannot live without. I’ve also found that new items are not made to last as they were previously. I can relate to finding your own style through thrifting. Your Instagram stories have opened my eyes to things that I may not have gravitated to previously. My teenage sister is frequently dragged along while I thrift (good bonding time) and she used to roll her eyes at me until we found a beautiful homecoming dress for $4!

I thrift for all of the reasons you mentioned above! I love to save money, I love old/antique things, I love making y home unique! It’s the best!

You always find the most beautiful pieces Gwen & I 😍 that lamp it is stunning. Did it come with the shade or did you buy one to go on it? I love thrifting but it is difficult to get bargains in Australia as most places tend to know the value of what they have or what people would likely be looking for.
Krystal says
I love thrifting for vintage stationary and wrapping paper. There’s just something about a gift wrapped in heavy ornate paper with a story to tell. I can never go back to dollar store quality! Plus there’s some really wild stuff out there too thats truly unique and special.

I enjoy thrifting because it’s fun finding treasures for your home especially when you know you saved money doing it.

What a wonderful discussion. I recently have began going to estate sales for fun and am retired. I only wish I had done so years ago because it is so much fun and the bargains are absolutely astounding. I’d tell anyone beginning to furnish a home or apartment to do it. What treasures and amazing bargains you can find. If I’d done this years ago, I’d have a lot more money for travel and an awesomely furnished home to boot!

What a wonderful topic! I, too, love the thrill of the hunt! Thrifting allows me to find unique items for my home and express my own style. My best find to date has been a large Walter Anderson print that I bought for $70 from the Scotts Antique Market in Atlanta. I contacted the Walter Anderson gallery in MS and found out his granddaughter did the hand coloring and it’s worth over $300! Thrifting is the best!

I love giving new life to old things. So much of the new just isn’t made as well as the old. Every piece of wood furniture in our house is from rummage and estate sales- it takes patience to find the right pieces, and quite a bit of trading up and reselling the old, but I’m so happy to reduce what’s going to waste to a landfill.
Hannah says
I love thrifting to find items that are often less expensive and better quality than items from big box stores. Bonus for the fact that they are often unique pieces that you can’t find anywhere else.

I love thrifting for all the reasons listed in your post. I love to take something that s broken or ugly and repurpose it. I also love hunting for hidden treasures. And I really want that dog paper holder to add to my dog/ dachshund collection.
Thank you for sharing your great ideas and beautiful home.

It’s a treasure hunt! I can always combine saving money and finding some high design when I’m thrifting. One of my favorite all time finds was an Eames chair for $10. Thrifting is one of our families favorite activities to do together now!

Like you, I fell in love with thrifting in high school for clothes, bags and beautiful items. Now, just out of college,, most of my apartment is full of furniture and goodies from antique shops. It takes you back to another time and you can see the beauty of something elequently made.
Thankfully my fiancé likes thrifting as much as I do 😊 we get compliments on our home all the time.

I thrift to save money. And it’s fun to just browse sometimes to see what’s out there. 😉

I first started thrifting because of you – you inspired me so much! My top reasons for thrifting are the thrill of the hunt and the variety that you can find. The saving money part definitely helps too. I love that the pieces I find are most likely not something you would find at typical retailers. I honestly used to want my house to look like everyone else’s, now I want the total opposite! Thrifting has definitely helped me identify my style and I would not have achieved that had I continued to solely shop the way I used to. I love that over time I have collected treasures that are unique and often hold more meaning to me.

I thrift because of all the reasons you posted – most of all for the thrill of the hunt! You never know what’s waiting for you on a dusty shelf or in a hidden corner…

I used to thrift to save money and find unique things. Unfortunately after two kids came along, I have given up on visiting thrift stores (for awhile). But I still love checking for good finds on Craigslist.

I have always loved finding thrift store treasures. I also love to give to my local thrift store, when I no longer have a use for items. It feels so much less wasteful, and so much more “thrifty”!

I love the thrill of the hunt, and I’m too frugal for anything else 🤣 the quality you can get for a killer price is really what keeps me coming back. I love looking around my home at all of my one of a kid vintage pieces. They make for great conversation pieces, and I never mind bragging about what a bargain they were! The best experience is when the thrusting stars align and you find something that has been on your thrift list for ages. I always covered the cute marble table you have with a brass base, and a few months ago I found one in the wild! During the furniture sale, and for only $7, it now has a perfect resting place next to my reading chair. Enjoying all of my killer finds never gets old!

It all started about 5 years ago when my childhood friend drove from TX to AL for me to tag along with her on the “Worlds Longest Yard Sale”. She has an antique booth and great aesthetic. Ever sense, I enjoy digging thru estate sales and thrift stores. I love the thrill of the hunt and finding truly unique items. Some items I buy strictly for resale to fund my habit. Lol

I started thrifting when my son was little. It started with those big kids consignment sales where you bring your stuff in and make money so you can spend money buying gently used next size up stuff. I figured if it worked for his clothes twice a year, why not my clothes? Why not year round? Now I thrift to find that one piece that nobody else noticed. That one jacket that would go for hundreds on ebay or those nesting tables that are going to be so on trend next year (oh, yeah! I’ll resell it when everybody else realizes they have to have it!).
