I’ve professed my love for Eddie Ross a few times on the blog before, and I’m so thrilled to be sharing a little Q&A I did with him today! To recap, I met Eddie about seven years ago when I was doing PR and event planning at a local event here in KC. I didn’t even have the slightest clue about entertaining or decor at the time but was working for a magazine that was all about those things. He and Jaithan were the kindest, most magnetic people I’d ever met in that realm, and I continue to be inspired by and grateful for both of them today. Ok, let’s get to it!
You work with every color and appear to mix them so effortlessly. Do you have a favorite one? Or a favorite combination of them?
Accessories! They’re the easiest way to add instant style to a room. I’m a maximalist, but that’s because layers infuse a house with personality. My advice: focus on items you love and style will always follow suit. For instance, display a set of candlesticks on a mantle paired with colorful candles, or use a collection of decorative boxes to add glamour to a coffee table. Take your dishes out of the cabinets for people to see, use vintage fabric to make unique pillows, and throw in metallic elements to bring sparkle to room.
Thank you, Gwen! I tried to create a book that was gorgeous, but truly inspiring! Modern Mix isn’t about encouraging everyone to stock their cabinets with the pieces I recommend. It’s to encourage readers to decorate and entertain in a way that makes them happy. It’s about waking up your senses to what you love – the colors, patterns, materials and shapes that feel like you – then training your eye to find them affordably.
I’ll be honest, I’m not really a book reader at this stage of my life. The little reading I do seems to be on a screen, and the books that I own tend to play form over function. I like pretty books, but I don’t usually take the time to actually look through them. I like learning things, but books can feel like a daunting way to do so in this age of quick information. But I’ve had the best time this fall pouring over Eddie’s book. So many design books give you great pictures but no real information, and the educating ones tend to be a bit dry.
This book is a feast for the eyes but also filled with tools and knowledge to help you live a more elegant life without breaking the bank. Eddie shows you how to find inspiration, discover new treasures thrifting, restore them to their former glory, mix them for a fresh look and entertain with your own newfound Modern Mix. He brings some history, some humor, and a lot of relatability to living a more colorful and creative life where style isn’t attached to an income level. I just love Eddie and his book, and I know you will too. You can purchase Modern Mix here.

YAY!! How cool you knew him even preblog. You are so right, he is seriously one of those people you meet and you can't help but feel engaged and truly like. This book was my inflight reading on the way back from NYC and I loved it. The info is great but I really just loved his funny side notes…I could hear him saying them. That was brilliant 🙂 xo

It seems like a wonderful meet up. I would love to be there in the next year’s event. Well, I also had done corporate event planning for a meet up at some event spaces. It was a wonderful experience to meet new people.
