But Mary and Libby were confident in my ideas, and a complete joy to work with. During our discussion it was clear that we were going for what I’ve been calling “handmade, not homemade.” No burlap here. Mary prefers a simple aesthetic while her mom loves color and detail. Creating watercolor branches in varying styles and incorporating handwritten elements mixed with a clean font played to both of their tastes.
First I made this laurel medallion with the bride and groom’s monogram. Once we finalized this piece I built off of it to create the invitation suite.
The reception will be in the Comfort’s backyard – which is breathtaking – including Libby’s new art studio/barn (This space is full of so much life, just like Libby, hence the pop of color for the reception card). I can’t wait to see their vision come to fruition and feel really honored to have been a part of the process.
If you’re married, I’d love to hear about your wedding invitations. How did they reflect your big day?

I really love what you did. Gorgeous! I need to practice my lettering; yours is perfect. 🙂
We had Go Go Snap on Etsy do our invitations. (We got married in 2011.) They were invitations created from vintage stationary. I LOVED them!! They were completely unique from anything I had seen before (or since). Our reception was in a vineyard, and our colors were all neutrals. Almost all of the details were handmade by my mom and me, and we also incorporated some vintage touches, which I think tied nicely into the invitations. (For example, part of the flower girl pillow was made from a vintage wedding gown.)
You're sweet, Lauren! Sounds so beautiful. I love when there are so many personal touches, it makes the day really special. Thanks for sharing!
I just got married this past June. The invitations turned into a huge thing, which I never expected! I couldn't find anything I liked (in my price range). My original idea was to have a letterpressed watercolor design, but nobody seemed to have one that I liked (again, my price range!). I ended up painting a few watercolor peonies, scanning them into my computer, and creating my own layout. We had them printed on a textured watercolor-type paper. They were pretty, although very different than my original vision! But, they only cost about $150. Can't beat that for DIY!!!
I totally understand the price range thing. It's easy to get what you like if you have unlimited budget, but most of us don't. Sounds so pretty and so much more meaningful when you do it yourself. Thanks for sharing!
These are so pretty! The purple stands out as such a fresh choice… it's just something a little different!
Honestly, I think you have a calling, Gwen. These are so thoughtfully executed and just lovely!
First of all, these are just wonderful.
One of my bridesmaids is a graphic designer [can it get any more perfect?] – so her and I teamed up on our invitations. It was 3 cards of the same size that fit into a handmade sleeve/envelope. Each of the sleeves was a different pattern keeping with our color scheme of blue & purple. I wanted the first card to be bold when the recipients pulled it from the sleeve – so we used a graphic banner with my husband and I's names on the first card. It was a lot of work – but totally worth it. We used the same idea with various sleeve patterns for the programs as well!
That's so nice and sounds beautiful!
Gwen we can't thank you enough for your help. Invitations were not my thing but they were very important to my mom. We poured through a ton of books, websites, etc and just couldn't find anything that set the mood for the wedding. These were perfect and conveyed exactly what we wanted for the tone of the wedding. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.
It was such a pleasure! Thanks for letting me be apart of your big day, and getting to know you and your mom a bit was such an honor. You're a very special family and it was a blessing to spend some time with you all!
Our wedding point person had taken off and had not left anyone in charge. The staff at Wedding location in Chicago weren't sure what to do and it was chaos for a while.
The experience was awesome. My cousin picked this dress for her bridesmaids and I love it. It's a snug fit but it doesn't make me feel squeezed or anything like that.

Well I agree that handmade wedding invitations are always incredible and heart touching too. You really made a pretty wedding invitation card. I really wish I could have seen this card earlier as I got married just last month at LA venue. But I will try to make such lovely card for my husband birthday invitation which is in next month.
