I’m trying to make myself get into full-on costume mode right now, or in a week I will be having major regret and anxiety for not starting sooner. 2 years ago, Xander dressed as one of the easiest and funniest costumes I’ve put together.
Around 18 months Xander became really interested in drums. It started when he was at church with me and someone sat him down at the drum kit. He loved it and kept a decent beat. My brother-in-law is an amazing drummer and was really excited to get X his own kit.
So for his 2nd brithday, Uncle Lance got him a drum kit and he was totally in love. This spawned my costume idea. Along with this…
My husband’s love of 80’s rock music. This was at a Halloween party right after we got married. I channeled Jem and Micah pulled out an old costume favorite: the metal hair band member. I figured that Xander could work this wig (as long as he would keep it on) and the rest we already had, could borrow, or DIY.
This photo is proof that even 2 years ago I was contemplating a blog.
I picked up a shirt at Target and used some fabric paint I had left over from another project. I found a font I liked and printed out Xander’s name. Using a light box (I have this one) I traced the font onto the shirt and then painted it. I cut off the sleeves and cut up the bottom.
We borrowed the leggings from a friend who has daughters, and the shoes were Xander’s. Using some theatre makeup I gave Xander some eyeliner and tattoos.
I recall having to bribe him with candy to keep the wig on for these pictures.
Yes, he looks less than amused. It was a really fun costume and simple enough to not be too fussy – without the wig he really loved it and had fun. Since we already had the wig, I didn’t feel too bad about him not wanting to wear it. I think that’s the worst case scenario: when you spend money on something your kid doesn’t want to wear.
This year is looking like it might be more work then I had hoped. Xander originally wanted to be Caption Hook, but when I took him to one of the costume shops he decided against it. In a way I was glad because all I had found at that point was a wig and a hat (totaling $35, way more than I wanted to spend on the whole thing!) and was thinking I was going to have to spend a lot AND spend time making the outfit too. But the problem with the switch: I had chosen Milly’s outfit based on what Xander was going to be. I had already purchased some things for her, so I guess the coordinating idea is now out the window! At this point I’ve got a bunch of fabric and a helmet (yes, Xander saw a helmet and wanted to change based on it…something I couldn’t find a costume for in his size, so I’ll be attempting that as well.) I better get to making!
Have you checked “costumes” off your list yet? Did you make, buy, or are you still in the thick of it all? Are you waiting until the last minute? Sometimes those end up being the best costumes!

So so fun, I should make my son wear something like this, but I don't think he'll go for it. He'll tell me I'm crazy if I come with zebra pants LOL. So adorable on you little one though.
My son is an amazing drummer already at age 11. He's been playing and had lessons since he is 6 years old. And all his teachers have told me that he is extremely gifted.

Ha! Well, don't base wanting children off of costumes…there's a bit more to it than that. Ha! But I'm sure when the time is right you will be the most amazing mama. And for now, you can always dress up pets! 🙂

Oh my…what a HOOT! Bless his little rock star heart! So adorable. I can't believe it, but we actually have both of our costumes ready to go. With the exception of some ruby red slippers. 🙂
My daughter, who is three, loves Wizard of Oz. And I just happen to have a darling Dorothy dress that belonged to my little sister. She wore it to church as a kid, but it looks JUST like Dorothy's. So glad my mom kept it. I'm sure Target can help us out with the shoes.
And as for my son, who is six, he is going to be a pilot. I found a super cute pilot's uniform at TJ Maxx. Which happens to be the second year in a row for scoring a costume there. He was a soldier last year and STILL plays "army" in it.
And, by the way, I LOVE that you were thinking about starting a blog even two years ago. So glad you did. 🙂

Such a great costume! My 2 year old wants to be Angelina Ballerina, Cinderella, and a mermaid all at the same time. So maybe Cinderella with mouse ears and mermaid tail?? The whims of a toddler…

What font did you use? I love the look and haven't been able to find one that's quite as rocker as the one you used. Thx!

Hi Lisa! Thanks for stopping by. I'm not sure what the font was called, but I know it came from dafont.com. I think you can search rock or I might have even looked for ACDC or Metallica font or something. 🙂 Best of luck!
