The weather we’ve been having this week in the Midwest has been incredible. The fall temperatures, the grey days, the sounds of the high school marching band practicing as I work in the yard: all reminders of why Fall is a favorite time of year. Yes, it’s still mid-August, but a planner like myself doesn’t have time to waste!
With Fall also comes Halloween, which was without a doubt my favorite holiday to prepare for as a child. We went all out on decorations every year, including a graveyard, that my dad constructed and the rest of us painted, with infamous characters like Jack the Ripper and Dracula. As I labored away with my son, I got to thinking about the fact that he would have a birthday on Friday the 13th, and this was a second best to Halloween in my eyes.
I knew I didn’t want to go all literal with it. Really Friday the 13th is more about superstitions, but I wanted that element of fearful fun (oxymoron?). So black and orange were out and black and red seemed a little too severe for a 4 year old’s birthday, but when I came across this green Lichen moss at a local store, Petals & Potpourri, I knew green was the way to go.

These invitations are so unique! They really will set a fun tone for the party. I agree, the weather here in the Midwest has been awesome and I can't wait for MSU football & tailgating!

Beautiful staging and photos, Gwen! And very fun ideas. My daughter's bday is Dec 13 – never realized she's have a Friday the 13th bday at some point! We've had the same weather this week on the east coast and it's been spectacular. I'm always a little sad to see summer go, though 🙂

Yes, summer is great, but I love living somewhere where there are 4 seasons. How old is your daughter?

Those are killer! Love them!

so fun! i'm assuming you designed them in photoshop?
themakerista@gmail.com says
I did. I don't have Illustrator, but that would probably be a lot easier. Thanks, Kels!

Oh, how I love discussing paper goods. Invites, in particular. And these are fabulous. What a fun theme! You are insanely talented. Can't wait for the party pics!
I just succumbed to my first character-themed birthday party. 🙁 Hello Kitty for my now three-year-old daughter. I made it through five years of birthdays for my son and two for my daughter of classic/non-commercial themes. But alas, I knew the day would come. Oh well…she was delighted.
And YES…we have had some unseasonably awesome weather here in KC lately. I am loving every minute of it, because it already feels fall-ish to me! And, maybe it's my name, but fall is definitely my favorite time of year. Hands down. So much to love. Back-to-school, football, marching bands, pumpkin patches, the weather, the changing leaves, sweaters, knowing that the holidays are just around the corner…I could go on and on.

Oh, the character themes! I have been holding out, but my son is starting to ask. 🙂 I don't know if you follow her or not, but Kristin killed the hello kitty theme! http://www.huntedinterior.com/2013/07/hello-kitty-party.html
Good luck with it! I'm sure it will be great, you can definitely do a theme without buying all of the stuff from the same aisle at the party store. 🙂

Oh, WOW…you're right…Kristin's Hello Kitty party was beyond fabulous! I haven't followed her blog, but I will now! Thanks! And how cool is it that she has you listed under "Blogs I Love"?!
Thanks for your encouraging words. My daughter's party was actually a couple weeks ago. But I TOTALLY agree…it CAN be done without buying "the kit"! What fun is that anyway? 🙂

I know, she is amazingly talented! And I was beyond honored to see that too! Sorry I misread…hope it was a great time, I'm sure it was just lovely!
