There she is, in all of her breakfast-making glory. Grandma made the cut. I really love her, and Micah’s fine with her since she’s in the corner.
Incorporating Xander’s favorite things into his room was important to me, but toys literally strewn throughout wasn’t what I envisioned. Most of his playing happens in the playroom at this point, and I like that. For his room I wanted him to be able to see the things he loved in a different way.
Art was the perfect solution. I had Xander select his favorite toys, and then we had a little photo shoot. All you need is a camera a smartphone can work just fine, some good light indirect is best, a few feet away from a bright window and some white poster board to create a clean backdrop. Batman, Spiderman and the Hulk all took turns posing while Xander adjusted their arms and legs.
Printing and framing can get pretty pricey, and I know these superheroes will probably not have a ton of lasting power. When it comes to kid’s rooms, I’m all for spending on pieces that can transition into older years and saving on things that aren’t so timeless in the life of a boy’s bedroom.
Snapbox prints offers printing and framing that’s fast (you’ll get most items within five business days) and inexpensive. I went with the Lustre paper in the white frame and was surprised to realize once they’d arrived that the frames are solid wood. The quality for what you pay is pretty incredible. I think the hulk prints are my favorite. These are the 8×8 print, but keep in mind when ordering that they add a 3″ boarder and the 2″ frame, making these almost 18×18. For under $12, that’s quite a bargain.
The Batman was actually one of my brother’s that he’s now passed down to Xander. All that white space gives your eye a rest amidst the sea of imagery and also brings light to the darkest corner of the room. I think that’s about it for Xander’s room. I’ve really enjoyed working on this space kid’s rooms will probably always be the spaces I most enjoy decorating and love hanging out in here now!

Pictures are awesome! What type of settings did you use on your camera?
themakerista@gmail.com says
Amy, I shot this with my 50mm at 1.8. I think I had the ISO at about 500 and the shutter at 1/50. Hope that helps!

The action figure pics are amazing. Did you take any DIY pics of the "photo shoot"!
themakerista@gmail.com says
Wendy, I didn't but I should have! Let me know specifically what you're wanting to see…I just did 2 sheets of poster board, one of the floor and one as the background and I put the toy at the very edge to create a lot of distance between him and the back. That makes the background extra soft and helped get rid of the line where the two met. Hope that helps!

I love SnapBox and I'm always amazed at how reasonable the prices are! What a great idea to make modern art out of toy photographs – that Batman one is seriously cool and eye-catching!

Me too! Thanks, Brynne!

What a great idea and what a great price! You're so right they do seem to outgrow their artwork quickly which is why I think it was so smart of your to incorporate some more mature pieces. I have to laugh though it looks like your son and I have the same sheets from Target! (:

Get out! I had no idea you made those art pieces. What a brilliant idea!

The room turned out incredible!! I love it! I took some similar photos with Little Miss A's toys back in Feb. but haven't printed them yet! You have reminded me of that forgotten project. And now I know where to print. perfect! Thanks Gwen!

such a clever idea! I love the way the way the photographs also bring some white space into the colorful room…a little space to breath, but still super fun and colorful.

This is brilliant!

Hi! I love this idea (and your blog – it’s one of my favorites). Any chance you’d be willing to sell a copy of the Batman photo? My husband had a Batman figure like that when he was a kid (although doesn’t anymore) and I’d love to frame it in our son’s room as surprise for him.
