Thank you for all of your thoughts on Disney, you have me excited to go! We’ve been slowly plugging along on our master refresh, and today I wanted to share a glimpse of the progress. We started with the beautiful chests as our jumping off point. Because they are so detailed and special, I knew the bed needed to be a bit more subdued. I liked the idea of an upholstered piece to bring softness to the space, but keeping the lines clean to contrast the dressers.
The Lyell Channel bed from Frontgate was the perfect piece. After ordering some samples, I was drawn to the Smoke linen – something masculine and a bit modern. The channel tufting is really pretty and the fabric isn’t too dark, but will still hide any wear and tear dogs and kids.
Because we moved up to a king it was also necessary to get a new mattress. We had been sleeping on an almost 10-year-old pillow top, and it was time for something new, regardless of size. My friend who created the best pillow ever seriously has been in the bedding business for years and recommended Helix.
Mattresses that ship to you have become a rather popular thing, but I wondered if they were as nice as one you bought in a store. My friend told me that old school mattress companies have been sending them compressed to retailers for ages to save on shipping costs…these companies are just cutting out the middle man! What’s great about Helix is they actually customize the mattress to you. Each person gets to choose their firmness, I chose soft, Micah chose very soft and they ask you several questions to make sure you’re getting the best sleep experience: age, height, weight, sleeping position, do you get hot at night? We’ve been sleeping on our new mattress for a few months now and are both really happy with it!
Finally, let’s talk rug. You know I’m all about the save here and splurge there, and rugs are somewhere I can usually save. That Craigslist alert came in handy again when I stumbled across this 9×12 Karastan the end of last summer. I had really envisioned more of a true red, but I like how this picks up the colors in the sunroom wallpaper. Now, our bedroom is kind of a difficult shape. The fireplace juts out, and the hearth doesn’t allow for much rug on that side. Ideally I’d have an 8×10 and lay it horizontal instead of vertical, but I think this visually works best and still gives a bit of rug to step on when you first get out of bed.
Oh, and the fan and blue paint as a reminder of where we started? If you follow along on Instagram you’ve seen our updates, but I’ll save that until we get our other lighting in. What else is left? Bedding, window treatments, a bit more art and we’re well on our way to a great refresh!

Gwen,
These night stands are perfection. I love how much surface area they have. Mine are very small and can hardly fit all the face creams and my phone ;). Great choice- can’t wait to see how the room progresses!

Also, I have to say- that mattress is pretty good-looking, sans sheets. I wish mine was that sleek!

Isn’t it pretty?!

Yes, they are so nice! I always have a lot of stuff I want right there…laptop, phone, water, magazines…It’s great and doesn’t get cluttered very quickly!

great room– now I see how it works with the nursery office–love the two together! I want big nightstands so much but I need them to be the height of my mattress–have you tested that out, the nightstands are much higher, is it ok? I have quite a low mattress too
themakerista@gmail.com says
Yes, the height is great. Not uncomfortable at all!

I really love the bed frame you selected. It looks like you did put a box spring under the new mattress? Yes, or no? Or maybe a bunky board? Please share what you did!
themakerista@gmail.com says
Thank you! I did do a box spring under the mattress. I’m glad they’re a cheap buy!

I absolutely love the room the sky light and fan is a great feature I wish I could have but our house is not condusive to that. But I love the less is more that comes across (intebntional or not) and the colours are great. Your article is one hell of an inspiration to tackle my bedroom. Very envious. Thanks
