Last week I talked about the reason for refreshing the master: a king bed. So you’d think I’d start there in the design, right? Well, I didn’t. I should say I didn’t end up starting there. A few years ago I began following The French Manoir on Instagram. Julie owns an exquisite chateau in France, and I was really inspired by her home. What captured me the most were her guest beds.
I dreamed of having a bed with that much personality, but I also knew that a bed that old wasn’t going to come in a king. Once I mourned my loss, I set out to find a king that had a similar feel. When dealing with a king bed, a substantial nightstand is always a good idea.

Whether it be a dresser, chest, or small desk – these pieces will add weight to the sides and help balance out that king-size frame. A big piece can also bring lots of extra bedside storage – something I’m currently lacking. I need a place for a nice lamp, a glass of water, magazines I dream of getting to, my Bible and devotionals…I love to work in bed, fold laundry in bed, paint my nails in bed, watch the iPad in bed…basically anything I want to do by myself because kids happens in my bedroom where I can lock myself in. Keeping these things stored nice and neat at the ready for a moment to myself sounds ideal. In the midst of my search I stumbled on this chest from Frontgate.
Sometimes I happen upon an item that changes the trajectory of my plans. This chest was it. I knew I wanted some sort of dresser to act as nightstands, but this piece also had the feeling I was going for with the bed in a more updated finish. The gold details really pop against the sleek black paint, and that marble top is just the lap of bedside luxury. I may not love my alarm going off, but to grab it off of a cool slab of stone makes the action of hitting snooze a little bit nicer.
A jumping off point in a room can be anything that strikes your fancy, and fancy these are. From here I was able to snowball down the list of other items I needed. I’ll share more soon…
What kind of nightstand are you workin’ with? What’s important for you to have bedside?

We used two kids dressers from Land of Nod for our “side tables” in our 50’s ranch. The house has a lack of closet issue with long skinny rooms. We were able to fit in the king size bed, but adding a full sides dress either meant no side tables, or one part of the bed had to be against the wall- which was never going to happen in my book. I found these: http://www.landofnod.com/natural-cargo-2-over-2-dresser/s428921 on lad of nod and though pricey (for me) they were one of the best decisions I’ve every made decor wise. The bed and the dressers just fit with a little breathing room down the long wall and it helps draw the focus to that wall so you don’t think about how little the room actually is!

Oh, I love these! Such a clean but sophisticated look, and something worth splurging on because you’ll probably have them forever!

Oh my goodness, that chest makes me weak in the knees! So dramatic! Can’t wait to see how you pair it with a new bed and accessories without it being too fussy.
I have matching Henry LinkBali Hai chests as nightstands for our master, which have served us well through two apartments with very limited closet space and now in our first house. The extra storage is perfect for socks, intimates and other small things.

What a classic, statement piece – I’m sure they are beautiful bedside!

You are absolutely right. I think small chests instead of the small nightstands I see all the time work better with Queen size beds also.

I would agree!

I have… zero nightstands. Our newborn is in our room so there’s a pack and play where my nightstands will be one day. I have a midcentury style King Bed. The idea would (hopefully) not be mid century furniture in the whole room. I’m not sure what style to go with but have always dreamed of three drawers chests flanking a bed. Drawer one: all of the electronics, because, seriously. There’s too many.

Ha, yes! I actually have been keeping the iPad and laptop in mine!

I have small mirrored nightstands next to our king bed that I know are WAY too small, but my husband doesn’t want me to get new ones for some reason. I will just have to order them one day so he can see how much more we’d benefit from extra storage and better balance in the room.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a man complaining about a piece of furniture being too big, so I think that’s worth a shot. 😉

Actually, you can find beds similar to those in a king size. Try searching panel beds on houzz.com
Love those dressers and I think they’ll make really stunning bedside tables.
Do you plan to keep the walls white?
themakerista@gmail.com says
I do. I like my bedrooms fresh and clean, and I wanted to update the space without really doing any major work. And trying to paint with a newborn doesn’t sound too fun. 😉
