I got it at least 6 months ago for under $1 at the thrift store and it has been stashed away in my laundry room (where I hoard all my other junk and potential projects) since then. It’s my maiden name’s crest, so I knew I wanted to do something special with it. My initial thought was to just spray paint it and place it in with some frames on a wall…possibly our bedroom?
But, I had a space that I had been wanting to fill for a long time with not much luck.
I planned the gallery grouping in Xander’s room without really considering what I would do with the space above his headboard. Another photo or print seemed a bit redundant to me. Many other things had come to mind: a big red “X”, perhaps? Some arrows? An old board game? I came across this poster in Paper Source one day and figured for $5 it was worth a shot. It was about the right size and I liked the depth the black added to the space, balancing the chalkboard on the opposite wall. The problem was, the tape didn’t stick so well, and during a nap one day the poster fell down on Xander’s head. If you know my son, you know he is rather cautious and matter-of-fact. He did not like that thing coming down on his head and did not trust it to be up there anymore.
When I pulled out the coat of arms the other day, Xander was really fascinated by it, asking about all the different parts and what they meant. I knew I had to incorporate it into his space somehow, but I knew that it could not stand alone on that wall. With the help of my husband and my dad, Xander now has his own shield and coat of arms.
The project did not end up how I had originally intended, but often those are the best kind of projects. For those of you who read Tuesday’s post, is this anywhere near what you were expecting? I’ll be back next week to share some details and how we got to the final product. Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Not at ALL what I expected! Honestly, I had no idea what you were going to do with it, but I knew it would be fabulous. And sure enough, I was right! This is SO neat. I'm kind of obsessed with wood + white right now, so I'm loving those stripes. Especially with the contrast of the bright red paint. And best of all, it's personal/meaningful.
