Xander’s room is starting to come together, but one element I’m still missing is a desk/nightstand. I absolutely love the look of a writing desk next to a bed.
While it’s not totally practical for myself, my husband would kill me during those late night blogging sessions (i.e. right now) I think it’s perfect in a kid’s room. Anything that does double duty is a winner in my book, and 5-year-olds don’t tend to have a need for lots of space to sprawl out work, so something small is just fine.
Xander’s bed is really classic, with a bit of detail, so I knew I wanted a more streamlined and simple desk. I envisioned it to be craftsman or rustic in feel with a fresh, light paint job, but when I was at Target this weekend I found some modern desks that were a great price (Cartwheel has 20% off desks until the 25th). I had one in my cart but ended up putting it back. I can thrift something for less I told myself. So I went on the hunt. Craigslist was a miss. Thrift store after antique mall, I continued to come up short. In two days I’m pretty sure I hit up every second hand place I know of, and nothing seemed to fit the bill.
Then I got to thinking, all of this gas and time spent looking for a deal: I could have bought a really nice desk with what was wasted. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the search, but was it the best use of my time? Probably not. Sometimes when you NEED to find something fast, thrifting shouldn’t be an option. Lesson learned.
After all of those hours of searching, I think I’ve found a desk that will do. It will need some work, but I’ve come to find that when you’re on a budget most things worth having do.

I love a desk too especially in a child's room. Can't wait to see what you found.

I've done that, too, even at Target. I will really like something there, then wonder, what are the odds the Target conglomerate has identified my own true style? Probably not much. Even so, sometimes Target does have neat pieces and my friend does such a great job creating a cozy home shopping at Target for most of her cheaper accessories. I just have this stubborn quality of wanting to make my rooms uniquely my own, and resist chain retailers. Not always, but sometimes being that way can, yes, almost be a vice! (One thing I did buy there a year or so ago was that blue French bulldog cookie jar they were selling last year and I love looking at it when I go in the kitchen! It was so cute and whimsical and it went with my kitchen. Plus we have french bulldogs so I felt it was an homage to them! :))

I am the exact same way! If I know lots of people have the same thing, I don't necessarily want it. ๐ But sometimes they do have things I just can't pass up!

I think that is a common factor in all stylist's minds–where you think wait, I think I can find something better and you spend countless hours searching for that better version of X item, only to realize what you had originall found was better. But other times you do find something better! I hope you find what you're looking for and can't wait to see Xander's room!!

It's true! I just never know when to call it quitsโฆand I'm not so great at giving up either. ๐

I love target furniture so much, and would be so likely to buy it, if it was made out of wood & not composite stuff! It just feels dinky when you open and close drawers and feel the finishes. The design is fantastic, but I'm finding myself more and more drawn to old, solid wood pieces. Can't wait to see what you come up with for Xander's room:)

You're right on! The minute I pull the drawer on a nightstand I'm disappointed. ๐

Yeah, thrifting can be love/hate. I hate finding what I really want at the wrong time financially and vice versa. Did you go for the target desk?

I ended up finding something else. ๐ I look forward to sharing it with you!
