This week has been filled with a sick, little girl, a teething baby, and a husband working lots of crazy hours. That hasn’t made for much doing on my end. When circumstances don’t allow me to do a lot, I look at ways to dream a lot. Laying with Milly and holding Domino I came across Abstract. This Netflix docuseries follows eight world renowned designers as they share their stories and inspirations. I was touched and moved by every single one, even the shoe and car designers but the interior designer, Ilse Crawford was certainly my favorite. Isle looks way beyond style to create a space, and her approach of focusing on the people and purpose above all else was really thought provoking.
Not to mention beautiful. Along with homes and businesses, Ilse and her team also create products. You have probably seen her collection at IKEA.
Have you seen Abstract? What should I be watching next?

Her line at IKEA was so gorgeous. Thanks for posting about this–I hadn’t heard of the series!

It was! I wish I would have gotten a few of her things before they were discontinued!

We just put this series into our queue yesterday and I can’t wait to get started. You might also like Chef’s Table on Netflix. Each series profiles a chef. It’s beautifully done, in fact, I think the same producers are behind Abstract, but don’t quote me on that!

I’ve heard good things about Chef’s Table…I’m not really a foodie, but I think it might be worth a go!

Watched abstract and loved them all! Another great one on Netflix is Grand Designs which is about renovations and new builds but all the homes are quite unusual, innovative and inspiring (i.c. a home on an island of the River Thames that will rise up/float during a flood).

I’ll have to add that to my list, I haven’t seen it…thanks for sharing, Laura!

LOVED Abstract! I watched it all during our massive snowstorm back in February.
I haven’t found many more things like that on Netflix, but if you have time for Youtube I have a long list of fashion documentaries to recommend: McQueen & I, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf (I would love to design displays for them btw), Valentino’s documentary etc.
I like to think I can find inspiration in fashion, so it’s just as nourishing!

I watched a ton of vintage Martha on YouTube this past winter…Fashion is a huge source of interior inspiration for me, I’ll have to start poking around!

and then of course for good measure, watch the Maria Carey episode of Cribs. Can you imagine if we did home tours that way?!
themakerista@gmail.com says
Ha, I remember that one!
Fiona says
Thanks Gwen, I watched it yesterday while the baby slept I had the most enjoyable break and felt all inspired after, and a tad naughty for not doing the house cleaning lol.

So glad to hear that, Fiona!
