The ceilings in the wood room are finished! Boy, those weren’t easy. I’ve talked about how simple popcorn removal is before, but coffered ceilings made this job quite a bit more difficult.
I know I have shared how we scrape the popcorn off, and as simple as that is, there is quite a bit more to getting a smooth and finished ceiling, especially when you’re dealing with beams. After scraping we had to tape off all of the woodwork and our drywall guy came in and floated the ceilings. He mudded for 2 days and then sanded it all down on the 3rd day to get a super sleek finish. This part is definitely worth paying someone else to do. It takes a real skill and the sanding creates a huge mess if you don’t have the right tools and knowledge.
After Tim was finished, we primed everything (cutting in around the wood definitely took a while) and then gave it two coats of white ceiling paint. From popcorn scraping to the final coat, we were able to finish in exactly one week. I even begged Micah to hang the chandelier at 10:30 that Friday night just to feel finished.
Now that the ceiling is done, I feel like I can focus on the rest of the space. The room has challenged me in many ways, specifically when trying to figure out a layout. With the fireplace off to the side and 6 doorways it’s definitely the heart of the house, there didn’t appear to be a clear answer to placement. But after a brainstorming session with my design partner in crime, I’m feeling really great about where things are going.
The couch not likely this one…we have another one coming that I’m so excited about! and coffee table will sit about where the are right now, and I think the berry colored buffet will go back underneath the passthrough window.
The fireplace will be getting a facelift (or two) to help it stand out, and I’m sourcing fabric for those chairs that were called some not-so-nice names. Where did they go, you might ask? My husband put them in the TV room during the ceiling work and played video games in them every night. Now he doesn’t want to move them back. Oh, the irony.

Love the progress! I'm in KC too and was wondering if have used anyone in the past to have your rugs cleaned? Thanks for the help!

don't you love that about our guys??? Antonio does the same thing. I bought a pair of Bergere chairs off CL a few years ago, he gave me such a hard time over them. One day he needed something to sit in, and from that moment on they became his favorite chair to game in! he was also SO SAD when I sold them (my taste had changed). they should just trust us 😛

The ceiling looks amazing. I can imagine the trouble it gave you. But it was worth it. I look forward to seeing what facelift the fireplace will get! This will be such a cozy room!

My husband would do the same thing. Can't wait to see what you'll do with the fireplace and what the other couch looks like

Oh, thank goodness you said something about the fireplace!! That was bugging me! I don't know what they were thinking in the 60s and 70s when they decided to bring that fake gold/brass plating into style for fireplaces. Just yuck! Can't wait to see what you do with it and the rest of the house! I'm so happy you also live in KC! It's always nice to know there are people here who know how to restore and decorate a home in beautiful ways! Keep up the good work!!
